Important New Policy Issued by the USM Board of Regents

Colleagues,

I am writing to inform you that the University System of Maryland (USM) Board of Regents approved an important new policy on Dec. 9, 2011, regarding the requirements for reporting suspected child abuse and neglect.

Recent events at Penn State University and elsewhere demonstrate the importance of having policies in place that clearly explain the reporting obligations, that provide protections for those reporting in good faith, and that establish measures each institution should have in place to respond to any reports.

Click here to review a copy of the USM policy along with Chancellor Kirwan's letter to the USM community on this critical issue.

We will communicate specific procedures and information for our University in January as indicated in the USM policy.

I know that the entire University community is committed to protecting children from abuse and neglect. Thank you for your support.

Sincerely,

Jay A. Perman, MD
President
