Congratulating President-Elect Biden and Vice President-Elect Harris

November 09, 2020

To the UMB Community:

We offer congratulations to President-Elect Joe Biden and to America’s first female, first Black, and first South Asian Vice President-Elect, Kamala Harris. In this unprecedented year, it was not surprising to me that our election results took a bit longer than usual. Although we remain in the midst of a dangerous pandemic, I am encouraged by the number of people who safely practiced their civic duty and voted.

I look forward to welcoming the new administration and working with it on issues the University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB) cares about: health care access and delivery; education; innovation; social justice and fair treatment for all.

President-Elect Biden stated: “I will be an American president. I will work as hard for those who didn't support me as I will for those who did. That's the job of a president. To represent all of us, not just our base or our party.”

I look forward to moving past a very divisive era, toward a more united America. And I welcome the opportunity for us all at UMB to continue to have the necessary conversations about how to confront our own biases, unearth and address inequalities, and use what we learn to create a more equitable UMB and to improve the human condition in everything that we do.

Sincerely,

Bruce E. Jarrell, MD, FACS

President
