A Bridge to Academic Excellence

- Description:
A Bridge to Academic Excellence (ABAE) is a collaborative community service project of the University of Maryland School of Pharmacy. It provides academic support to area middle and high school students through tutoring and mentoring.
ABAE targets those middle and high school students who wish to pursue health professional careers, including STEM2 careers, but may have difficulty in their math, science or English classes. The program currently provides tutoring to over 145 middle and high schools students from Baltimore City and the Baltimore/Washington metro area bypairing them with pharmacy, dental, law, medical, nursing, social work and physical therapy students at the university.

American Pharmacists Association Academy of Student Pharmacists (Know Your Pharmacist, Know Your Medications)

American Pharmacists Association Academy of Student Pharmacists (APhA-ASP) is the University of Maryland School of Pharmacyýs chapter of the national organization. The mission of APhA-ASP is to be the collective voice of student pharmacists, to provide opportunities for professional growth, and to actively promote the future of pharmacy.
As well as supporting its many operations, APhA-ASP drives several of its own initiatives. For instance, APhA-ASP members participate in Flu Clinics in community pharmacies. They also sponsor a clothing drive from September through the beginning of November to collect new or gently used coats to give to the community. APhA-ASP holds several DEA Drug Take Back Days to collect expired medications from the community for proper disposal. During election years, APhA-ASP conduct a ýVote and Vaxý program to provide free flu shots to voters at polling sites.. Finally, APhA-ASP organizes the ýScript Your Futureý campaign during the spring semester to promote greater medication adherence among community members.

American Society of Consultant Pharmacists (ASCP) is the international professional association that provides leadership, education, advocacy, and resources to advance the practice of senior care pharmacy and the promotion of healthy aging. The goals of the student chapter are to increase awareness of the opportunities available in the field of consultant pharmacy and to provide relevant educational programs to help prepare students for this exciting field. Currently, the UMB Student Chapter is the largest student chapter in the nation.
ASCP does a number of community outreach activities, such as working with partners to provide Medicare Part D counseling to qualifying community members. Operation Diabetes is a diabetes screening and awareness campaign developed by APhA-ASP that is designed to increase awareness of diabetes. The goals of the committee are to help the public become more knowledgeable about the disease and to recognize the risk factors, signs and symptoms of pre-diabetes and diabetes. The Maryland chapter of APhA-ASP and the Operation Diabetes committee attend health fairs, as well as many other community events where we directly involve pharmacists and pharmacy students in diabetes management counseling and screening. It is our mission to help identify those who may not have been diagnosed in the past, help patients manage their diabetes, and ultimately prevent long-term complications of the disease.

Operation Immunization is an organization of pharmacy students who educate the public about immunizations, including why they are important and the time scheduling of when a person should receive which immunizations. The Iota chapter of Phi Delta Chi (PDC) was founded in 1905 at the University of Maryland Baltimore with the objective to ýadvance the science of pharmacy and it's allied interests and to foster and promote a spirit of brotherhood among its members."
