This site provides a “personality” (or preference) assessment that returns a 4-letter code similar to the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator. The MAPP is an interest survey designed by the International Assessment Network in Minneapolis, MN. A free sample MAPP Career Analysis is provided to help individuals identify their preferences for working with people or things, and other job characteristics; it also suggests some occupations that match these preferences. The resulting report is sent to the user via e-mail, outlining his or her “natural motivations and talent for work” and matching these to five occupational descriptions from O*NET.

Glassdoor

Employees and former employees anonymously review companies, give pros and cons, share information about the interview and job search process and report which companies employees rate the highest. The Company Reviews tab will bring you to a section where you can search for employers and see what employees think about working there and find typical salaries.

Google Maps propinquity search

Navigate to a location on Google Maps. Use the "Search Nearby" feature to look for a type of company.

LinkedIn

Though LinkedIn has many functions, to find companies enter the company name in the search window, find a university to see where their graduates work. Another great way to find companies is to look at the “People also viewed” feature while on a company page. You can also see the people who have or do work there and network with them.

Meetup

Meetup is a site for people with all kinds of interests to find each other. Many groups are focused around particular industries and are attended by employees or hosted by employers. Joining the right Meetsups can provide the opportunity to meet people in the same field and contact prospective employers.

The Muse

You can explore the inside of top companies, and meet the people that work there. This can give you an idea of the workplace setting and the company culture.

The Public Register

You can order printed or online versions of annual reports (for free). For selected companies you can obtain corporate and financial information.

CareerBuilder is a job search community that allows a job seeker to store a resume online without posting it in the database. Federal Bonding Program

The U.S. Department of Labor established The Federal Bonding Program in 1966 to provide Fidelity Bonds that guarantee honesty for “at-risk,” hard-to-place job seekers. The bonds cover the first six months of employment. There is no cost to the job applicant or the employer. This site describes the process to access federal bonds and state-based contacts for individuals who have been incarcerated.

Kansas Reentry Guide

This site shares an example of a state based client guide to reentry based on best practices in career and reentry planning. Skills to Pay the Bills: Mastering Soft Skills for Workplace Success

This site outlines a curriculum developed by the DOL/ODEP (Office of Disability Employment Policy) focused on teaching "soft" or workforce readiness skills to youth, including youth with disabilities. Created for youth development professionals as an introduction to workplace interpersonal and professional skills, the curriculum is targeted for youth ages 14 to 21 in both in-school and out-of-school environments. Corporate Equality Index (Human Right’s Campaign)

The Human Rights Campaign is also the publisher of the Corporate Equality Index. My Next Move for Veterans

Interactive tool designed to help veterans who are current job seekers learn about their career options. The site has tasks, skills, salary information, job listings, and more for over 900 different careers. Veterans can find careers through keyword search; by browsing industries that employ different types of workers; or by discovering civilian careers that are similar to their job in the military. Syracuse University Institute for Veterans and Military Families

The IVMF delivers unique and innovative programs in career, vocations, and entrepreneurship education and training to post 9/11 veterans and active duty military spouses, as well as tailored programs to all veterans. Junior Achievement

JA brings volunteers from the community into the classroom to deliver proven, hands-on programming on financial literacy, work readiness, and entrepreneurship that can inspire students to understand the opportunities provided by education.

Kids.gov

Kids.gov was the official kids' portal for the U.S. government. While it linked kids, parents and teachers to information and services on the web from government agencies, schools, and educational organizations, the page was merged into the usa.gov site. The career videos are still there.

March 2 Success

March 2 Success is a free website sponsored by the U.S. Army and provides access to online study materials to help improve scores on standardized tests such as state exit exams, college entrance exams including the SAT and ACT, military entrance exam (ASVAB) and others. The program is free and completely confidential. Users will not be contacted by Army recruiters unless that contact is specifically requested.
