The University of Maryland, Baltimore is firmly committed to the principles of equal access and opportunity for individuals with disabilities in compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 (ADA), the Americans with Disabilities Amendments Act (ADAAA), and applicable sections of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973. The University requires that a reasonable accommodation be made for participation and equal access to programs, services, activities, or facilities unless the accommodation would result in undue hardship or threaten the health and safety of University employees or other participants. ADA Steering Committee

The Office of Diversity, ADA and Affirmative Action evaluates disability accommodation requests from employees in compliance with the ADA, ADAAA and applicable sections of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973. The ADA was designed to remove barriers that prevent qualified individuals with disabilities from enjoying the same opportunities that are available to persons without disabilities. The associate vice president of human resource services, Matthew Lasecki, chairs the ADA Steering Committee. The administrator of Diversity, ADA, and Affirmative Action, Sheila Blackshear, also serves on the committee to address issues of disability and access at UMB.

The ADA Steering Committee is designed to strengthen the University’s commitment to the law, policy, and principles of equal access and opportunity for persons with disabilities. The ADA Steering Committee is organized to ensure that all parts of the organization are represented in ADA issues and that we speak in one voice in compliance with the law. The committee is composed of various faculty, staff, students, and individuals with disabilities from the campus community.

Under the ADA Steering Committee, the University participates in the Access Maryland program through the Maryland Department of Disabilities (MDOD). The purpose of the program is to bring state-owned facilities into compliance with state and federal mandates requiring access for person with disabilities. The University maintains a transition plan under MDOD. This plan is a three-year living document that helps the campus estimate the cost of removing barriers to accessibility.
