Christine Lau, MD, MBA, was named chair of the University of Maryland School of Medicine's Department of Surgery, becoming the first woman to lead the department since its early beginnings in the 1800s. Lau is a nationally renowned thoracic and lung transplant surgeon, federally funded scientist, and expert clinician who previously was chief of the Division of Thoracic Surgery at the University of Virginia.
