All Week
Scavenger Hunt
All day, Information Desk
Discover the SMC Campus Center. Pick up a self-guided tour sheet from the Information Desk in the lobby and enter the Scavenger Hunt! All completed tour sheets will be entered into a raffle for cool prizes.
Guess the Calories
10 a.m. to 8 p.m., 4th floor
What's your caloric intake? Come guess how many calories are in a variety of foods. Prizes will be awarded for correct answers. Food samples and other fun nutritional items will be available!
Java and Jotting With the Writing Center
10 a.m. to noon, 1st floor, Fireplace Lounge
Throughout the week, writing consultants will be on hand with helpful writing tips and resources, bookmarks with citation information, and more.
Intro to Group Exercise Various times, 3rd, 4th, and 5th floors
Check out what URecFit has to offer. Morning, lunchtime, and evening group exercise classes for Welcome Week are on tap. Slightly shorter than normal classes, followed by Q&A sessions with instructors, you may drop in at anytime during classes and come as you are—classes are "street clothes" friendly. Joy Amongst the Tribe
6 a.m., SMC Campus Center and School of Nursing (SON) Courtyard
Join our tribe of morning runners and walkers of all skill levels for a great start to your day. We will meet for a sunrise 5K, making pit stops along the route for beverages and camaraderie in the Inner Harbor and Federal Hill. Enjoy a light breakfast and refreshments when you return to the SMC Campus Center.
Music at Lunch: Latin Vibes
Noon to 2 p.m., 2nd floor, Café Dining Area
Take a midday break and enjoy the sweet sounds of Latin music.
President's New Student Welcome Reception
5 to 6 p.m., Ballrooms
Join Jay A. Perman, MD, president of the University of Maryland, for conversation and ice cream with all the toppings.
Bench for a Cause—Bench Press Contest*
6 to 8 p.m., 5th floor How much can you lift? Stop by the fitness floor and see if you can "carry your weight." Contest participants will attempt to lift 50 percent of their body weight. Winners in both the men's and women's divisions will receive UM Fitness Champion T-shirts.
UM Game Night
6 to 8 p.m., Meeting Room 351 Get in on the games! Come on over and play a hand of cards or a round of Wii bowling, flex your trivia muscles in the "Jeopardy!"+ competition, attempt the challenges in UM in It to Win It, and much more! Refreshments available, prizes awarded.

"The Pursuit of Happyness"

Free popcorn, s'mores, and beverages! Enjoy a movie in the great outdoors. "The Pursuit of Happyness" is the true story of a single dad who went from living on the streets to owning his own brokerage firm.

To the Market With Bon Appétit's Chef Ty: Part I
11 a.m. to noon, 1st floor, Bon Appétit To Go
Ty Paup, general manager and executive chef for Bon Appétit, will lead a trip to UM's Farmers Market to pick up some delicious, locally sourced food (see Part II).
Music at Lunch: Jazz
Noon to 2 p.m., 2nd floor, Prefunction Lounge
What's better than jazz for lunch? Take a break with this dynamic ensemble.
To the Market With Bon Appétit's Chef Ty: Part II
3:30 to 5 p.m., 2nd floor, Bon Appétit Café
Chef Ty will lead a participatory cooking demonstration at the SMC Campus Center using food bought at the Farmers Market earlier in the day (see Part I).
Swim for a Cause—Lapping for 30 Contest*
6 to 9 p.m., 4th floor, Pool
How many laps can you swim in 30 minutes? Pick your stroke and float on over to the pool. The winner in both the men's and women's divisions will receive a UM Aquatic T-shirt.
Net Night
6 to 9 p.m., URecFit, Pratt Gym
Stop by the Pratt Gym for informal games including volleyball, wallyball, and badminton. Staff will be available to help "dig" into the rules for you, and they may even jump onto the court to show off their skills.
Open Mic Night: Music, Poetry, and Karaoke
6 to 10 p.m., Ballrooms
Showcase your musical skills and poetic verve at this exciting event.
Wednesday 8/31
Breakfast With URecFit Staffers
7 to 9 a.m., 4th floor
Come out and meet the professional staff of URecFit while enjoying a continental breakfast. This is a great opportunity to suggest programming ideas, get your burning questions answered, and meet other new students.
Be Your Own Best Editor
8:30 to 10 a.m., Meeting Room 311
Learn how to edit your own papers! This workshop will supply you with the tools you need to proofread, revise, and improve the organization and coherence of your written work.
Get Your Grill On!
11 a.m. to 3 p.m., Patio
Join us for a good 'ole cookout! For just $8 choose a Roseda Black Angus Farms hamburger, two all-beef hot dogs, a barbeque chicken breast or a pit beef sandwich. All are served with chips and a cold beverage.
Garden Games
11 a.m. to 3 p.m., SON Courtyard
Join your classmates for a little bocce ball, beanbag toss (cornhole) or croquet. Make an afternoon of it—get your lunch from the Bon Appétit Grill and enjoy the Caribbean band!
Music at Lunch: Caribbean Steel Drums
Noon to 2 p.m., Patio
Take a midweek break with your lunch and Caribbean steel drums on the patio.
Insider's Guide to Happiness
12:30 to 1:30 p.m., Meeting Room 351
Upper-level students from across campus will participate in this Q&A panel, offering insight into staying connected, balanced, well, successful, and happy while pursuing a degree at UM.
UM Academic Symposium
5 to 7:30 p.m., Ballrooms
Join us for a stimulating conversation on the "Role and Responsibility of the University in Urban Renewal" featuring John Puckett, PhD, a professor in the University of Pennsylvania's Graduate School of Education. Puckett was instrumental in the University of Pennsylvania's development in West Philadelphia. Reception to follow. To register for this event, click here.

Shoot for a Cause—Free Throw Shooting Contest*
6 to 8 p.m., URecFit, Pratt Gym
How many free throws can you make? Stop by the basketball courts and see if you can make the pressure shot(s). The winners in both the men's and women's divisions will receive UM Intramural Sports Champion T-shirts.

Bowl for a Cause—Wii Bowling Contest*
8 a.m. to 8 p.m., 4th floor
Time to knock down some pins! The Wii is available for checkout—practice and play whenever you want. The winners in both the men's and women's divisions will receive UM URecFit T-shirts.
Music at Lunch: Harpist
Noon to 2 p.m., 1st floor, Atrium
Make lunch your moment. Join us for a relaxing musical interlude.
Mood Booster: Food and Happiness
Noon to 1 p.m., Meeting Room 351
Terri Brownlee MPH, RD, LDN, registered dietician, will share her thoughts about how diet affects happiness. She will offer suggestions on choosing foods that help boost good moods. Chef Ty, of Bon Appétit, will join the fun and offer a tasting of "happy" foods. Quick recipes for the home chef also will be available.
*Each day during Welcome Week, URecFit will offer an event that enables the University community to raise money for Paul's Place (www.paulsplaceoutreach.org). Participating donors will receive a Welcome Week 2011 URecFit for a Cause T-Shirt. Everyone is welcome to participate, even if you choose not to donate. Also, spectators are encouraged to come out and cheer the contestants on. See you at URecFit!
