Heritage/History Month Programming
Office of Academic & Student Affairs
Location: Suite 302, SMC Campus Center
Phone: 6-7438

The purpose of the Heritage/History Programming is to provide a unique setting for the encouragement of broad social, cultural, recreational, and educational programming for the UM university and its surroundings. These cultural-based programs serve as a medium for the interaction and the exploration of vital issues concerning the campus community and society as a whole.  Each program will aim to do the following:

  • Provide an understanding of the multiple perspectives of others, while valuing one’s own heritages, experiences and values
  • Encourage an appreciation for the interactive relationship of race, sexual orientation, class and gender in society
  • Articulate views and experiences around race, sexual orientation, class and gender by integrating personal experiences and academic perspectives
  • Appreciate the role that the arts and cultural events can play in developing an enlightened and culturally-empowered perspective
  • Influenced social change on campus and in society with creativity, integrity and compassion

UBalance points can be earned by attending Heritage/History Programming events at varying rates.  Click here to view these events on the Wellness Hub calendar or click on the event title below to RSVP.

Coming Out Day

Monday, October 10, 2011

12:00 p.m. – 2:30 p.m.

SMC CC Ballroom Pre-function Lounge

National Coming Out Day is Tuesday, October 11, 2011, but we are celebrating a day early. National Coming Out Day is a time to publicly display gay pride. Many choose this day to come out to their parents, friends, co-workers and themselves. You don't have to be a member of the LGBT community to celebrate National Coming Out Day. During this day we plan to promote government and public awareness of gay, bisexual, lesbian and transgender rights; to celebrate homosexuality; and form a network of straight allies on the UM campus. So stop by during your lunch break for a free snack, learn about LGBT History Month, become a straight ally or “Come Out.”

Safe Space Training

Monday, October 10, 2011

12:15 p.m. – 1:15 p.m.

SMC CC Ballroom B

Safe Space is a national program that identifies LGBT-friendly faculty, staff, and students. The Safe Space training workshop provides information about how to be a supportive ally to LGBT students and colleagues. Upon completion, participants have the option of becoming a Safe Space member and displaying an UM Safe Space placard. Refreshments will be provided.
