UM Dental School Honored by Cecil County for its Community Service

On April 6, the University of Maryland Dental School was honored by the Cecil County Board of Commissioners and the Cecil County Health Department with their Outstanding Community Service Award in Public Health. Dean Christian Stohler, DMD, DrMedDent, represented the School and received the award.

The awards are given at the County Board of Commissioners meeting during the first week in April, Public Health Week, to recognize health care professionals and community members for their contributions and long-term commitment to public health in Cecil County.

"It's a perfect fit between the community of Cecil County and the University of Maryland Dental School," says Stohler. "Cecil County offers us a perfect balance to our urban environment in Baltimore. We are grateful for the warm welcome from the community and the patients that we are serving."

In a prepared statement, county health officials said "many Cecil County residents have poor dental health because of limited access to dental care and fluoridated water supplies. In collaboration with Union Hospital, the University of Maryland Dental School opened the University of Maryland Dental School - Perryville on Aug. 11, 2009. Dental services, including case management, are provided to children and pregnant women on Medical Assistance, and to seniors who meet eligibility requirements. Dental hygiene and emergency care are provided to all ages on a walk-in basis with minimal charge for services."

The University of Maryland Dental School formed a partnership with Union Hospital of Elkton in January 2008 to provide dental care to those Cecil County residents who have not been getting fully adequate services.

Under the agreement, the Dental School occupies a portion of Union Hospital's Principio Health Center, the new $15 million outpatient health center in Perryville. A 26-chair oral health suite is equipped for pediatric and adult dental services.
