President Ramsay's statement:
I am delighted to welcome Dr. Jay Perman, Dean of the School of Medicine at the University of Kentucky, as UMB's next president. Dr. Perman has a distinguished reputation as an educator, clinician and administrator, and having him come back to Baltimore is like bringing an old friend home.
As I announced last summer, my resignation as president would become effective with the appointment of the new president. Given that the search is now complete and given the need for further review of issues raised in the legislative audit that involve the president's office, I have concluded that it is in the university's best interest that I step down at this time. I have, therefore, notified Chancellor Kirwan that I shall resign my presidency effective March 1, 2010.
I am very proud of the progress that the campus has made over the last nearly sixteen years, and of the remarkable accomplishments of the men and women of the University of Maryland family. I will continue to watch with interest UMB's growth and development as we head into the next decade.
Anne and I have enjoyed our years in Baltimore, and the many friends that we have made here. As we return to California, we carry with us fond memories and offer our best wishes to Dr. Perman, and the faculty, staff and students of the University of Maryland.
