Hundreds Attend UMMS Summer Health Fair

Hundreds of participants received free cholesterol checks and jumped rope as part of the University of Maryland Medical System's (UMMS) Spring Into a Healthy Summer health fair.

The event, which was held at University Plaza across from the University of Maryland Medical Center (UMMC), featured more than 50 health groups. Participants enjoyed complementary chair massages, ate fresh fruit, and received samples of lip balm, sunscreen and other items for summer activities.

To get participants in the swing of summer, instructors led line dancing, jump roping, and hula hooping sessions. Information booths were stocked with brochures about smoking cessation, heart disease, cancer, and healthy eating.

"UMMS makes it simple for people to get screened by taking health professionals out of their medical offices and bringing them into the community," says Sharon Boston, MSJ, senior media relations manager at UMMS.

UMMS medical staff provided blood pressure and cholesterol checks. HIV screenings were available in mobile vans. A special tent was reserved for vascular screenings to check for blocked veins and arteries.

The event was part of UMMS's community outreach, a coordinated effort to give back and improve the health of all Marylanders. Health screenings and other community-oriented health activities are regularly offered by UMMS throughout the year.
