Members of House Appropriations Committee Visit UMB |
Members of the Maryland House Appropriations Committee were given a
demonstration of nursing education, with the help of a high-fidelity
mannequin and faculty and students at the University of Maryland School
of Nursing (UMSON), at the culmination of a briefing for the
committee on July 30.
Del. Norman Conway, committee chair, along with about 20 other
legislators and staff of the Maryland House of Delegates participated
in the committee's site visit to the University
of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB). President Jay A. Perman, MD, and University
leaders conducted the briefing.
Perman discussed the need for interprofessional education in the
changing health environment. "We are perfectly positioned" to
ensure that students "understand the role of team" as they prepare to
enter professions in the health sciences and human services, he said.
Kevin Cullen, MD, Marlene and
Stewart Greenebaum Distinguished Professor and director of the University of Maryland Greenebaum Cancer Center; Stuart
Martin, PhD, a researcher at Greenebaum and an associate
professor of physiology at the School
of Medicine (SOM); and William
Regine, MD, the Isadore & Fannie Schneider Foxman Endowed
Chair in Radiation Oncology at the School, presented cancer research
activities and new discoveries to evidence the progress underway in
treating and eliminating cancer.
Regine spoke about the $200 million privately funded Maryland
Proton Treatment Center. The facility, which is under construction
in the UM BioPark, will offer
the most advanced radiation technology in cancer treatment to patients
starting in 2015.
Members of the committee had the opportunity to meet and talk with two
UMB students, Eddie Steine, a
third-year student in the Bachelor of Science in Nursing program, and Vanessa Hill, who is enrolled in the
Clinical Nurse Leader Program. The latter is a Master of Science
program designed for individuals who wish to enter nursing after
earning college credentials in other fields.
The students participated in a patient-care scenario led by Clinical
Simulation Laboratory Director Mary
Fey, MS, RN, that was followed by remarks by UMSON Dean Jane M. Kirschling, PhD, RN, FAAN.
Bruce E. Jarrell, MD, FACS,
chief academic and research officer and senior vice president and dean
of the Graduate School,
outlined achievements under University
of Maryland: MPowering the State,
whereby UMB and the University of Maryland, College Park (UMCP) are
building and strengthening their collaborations. James L. Hughes, MBA, chief
enterprise and economic development officer and vice president of UMB,
spoke on gains in technology transfer and the collaborative potential
of UM Ventures, a joint undertaking with
UMCP that is part of MPowering the State.
