Dr. Mark Reynolds named School of Dentistry interim dean

Mark Reynolds, MA, DDS, PhD, has been named interim dean of the University of Maryland School of Dentistry . Reynolds takes the reins from Christian S. Stohler, DMD, DrMedDent, who has served as dean since 2003, and oversaw considerable growth in the school's facilities and academic capabilities.

A distinguished academic dentist, Reynolds joined the university in 1996 as assistant professor in the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology and Periodontics. Since 2001 he has served as director of the advanced dental education program in periodontics. And since 2005 he has served as chair of the Department of Periodontics.

Reynolds' passion for periodontics is evident in his more than 200 scholarly publications and numerous affiliations with professional organizations. In recognition of his expertise, Reynolds was elected to a six-year term as a director of the American Board of Periodontology, where he works to establish examination tools and shape the direction of periodontics.

His emphasis on developing basic and clinical research has resulted in a significant increase in the number of peer-reviewed publications by department faculty. From the start, Reynolds has been committed to creating a cutting-edge program in periodontics, creating curricula in advanced surgical microscopy, periodontal regeneration and dental implants with the latest emerging technologies.

To ensure a smooth transition, Reynolds will assume his new role on July 15 and serve as interim dean of the School of Dentistry until a national search is concluded and a new dean has been named.
