Perman Portrait Unveiled in Presidents Hall

On Feb. 23, UMB President Bruce E. Jarrell, MD, FACS, presided over a ceremony to unveil the official portrait of his predecessor, Jay A. Perman, MD, who is now chancellor of the University System of Maryland (USM). The event, held at the SMC Campus Center in the hallway outside the Elm Ballrooms now dubbed Presidents Hall, drew an overflow crowd. After the unveiling, Perman thanked artist Jacqueline Jasper for her work and said the painting was “beautiful.” Among the attendees was Linda R. Gooden, MBA, chair of the USM Board of Regents, who praised Perman for his 10-year tenure at the helm of UMB. “As UMB president, he strengthened the institution’s ties to the city of Baltimore, enhancing economic inclusion, health care access, community engagement, innovation, and so much more. Jay put a premium on creating pathways for underrepresented students, especially students interested in the STEM fields,” Gooden said. UMB Foundation Board chair Harry Knipp, MD ’76, FACR, also highlighted Perman’s work to build bridges with the West Baltimore community and the importance of that work to the University’s students. Perman offered that some of the most special moments in his career happened at UMB, where he said, “We are a family.”
