Chancellor Robert L. Caret's Statement on Temporary Ban of Individuals Entering the United States

January 30, 2017

The University System of Maryland (USM) community reaffirms its deep commitment to diversity and inclusion, a cornerstone of nurturing a rich and robust environment of high quality, education, research, and service. We join many higher education institutions nationwide in expressing our concern over the temporary banning of individuals from seven predominantly Muslim countries from entry into the United States. The tradition of welcoming talented individuals from all countries to our academic communities helps our country maintain its global leadership in higher education and enriches all of us. We do not yet know whether, and to what extent, such a ban may impact members of our academic communities.

We look forward to learning more details about the ban and its potential impact on the USM community, and on colleges and universities across the country. We believe that our national security can be enhanced without sacrificing our commitment to openness in the academic community.
