What is Spirituality?
Spirituality is based on the answers one gives to the essential questions of life: Who am I? What is my destiny? Why am I here? Where did all this come from?
There are many definitions of spirituality:
- Searching and moving toward meaning and purpose for your life
- Set of guiding beliefs, principles, or values
- A connectedness to yourself and others
- Wholeness and harmony
- A journey of self-discovery and inner transformation
- A search for the Sacred and/or Divine
Spirituality is not the same thing as religion, although for some people they can be similar. For those with a religious faith, spirituality is often expressed as intimacy with God or other words expressing the Divine.
What is spiritual wellness?
Spiritual wellness is the process of looking within and nurturing your spiritual core. This process is unique for each individual.
Signs of Spiritual Wellness
- You intentionally live by a set of guiding beliefs, principles, or values
- You have a sense of meaning and purpose in life
- Your actions are consistent with your beliefs
- You respect and appreciate differing values and beliefs
- You care about other people
- You are comfortable with your level of involvement/non-involvement with a religious community
- You can explain why you believe what you believe
- You have a sense of belonging to something greater than yourself
Why is spiritual wellness important?
Devoting time to nurture the spiritual component of who we are helps to keep us peaceful, renewed, and connected. Research has shown that spirituality and religiousness are associated with emotional and physical wellness. Spiritual people often report a greater sense of purpose, life satisfaction, and optimism and less emotional distress, such as depression and anxiety. Spiritual beliefs can be a source of comfort and strength during difficult times.
