National Conference for College Women Student Leaders

From May 31 to June 3, 2017, the National Conference for College Women Student Leaders (NCCWSL) took place at the University of Maryland, College Park. This annual leadership conference, with a 30-year history, was sponsored by UMB and the UMBrella Group.

UMB gave a scholarship to a School of Pharmacy student, Sanchari Ghosh, to attend the conference, where she had the opportunity to attend workshops, meet trailblazing Women of Distinction awardees and keynote speakers, and network with other young university women.

ACUI 2017 Scholarship Winners

The UMBrella Group awarded scholarships to Marianne Gibson, MS, and Emily Lee, MSW, to attend the Association of College Unions International (ACUI) Women’s Leadership Institute conference in Amelia Island, Fla., on Dec. 3-6, 2017.

Marianne Gibson, MS

Marianne Gibson Marianne Gibson, MS, joined the University of Maryland, Baltimore in 2014, serving as a program manager with the Behavioral Health Resources Team, which is housed in the School of Pharmacy’s Department of Pharmaceutical Health Services Research. As a program manager, Gibson is responsible for providing technical and evaluation assistance to local health departments in Maryland as they apply a public health planning model to address substance use and misuse. On campus, she has been involved with the Emerging Leaders Program and the Baltimore Area Health Education Center’s Interprofessional Education (IPE) Planning Committee, which coordinated two IPE events to educate students on the opioid epidemic and train students on how to administer the life-saving drug naloxone.

Emily Lee, MSW

Emily LeeEmily Lee, MSW, is the research and academic affairs strategic administrator at the University of Maryland School of Social Work (SSW). She has a key leadership role in developing and directing strategic initiatives to strengthen the SSW’s competitiveness in procuring state and federal research grants and improve the quality of its MSW program. She builds a sense of community and a culture of information-sharing among SSW principal investigators. She facilitated quality improvements in the SSW at large with the creation of the school’s first consumer satisfaction survey, which generated new ideas for improving the school. Additionally, she works within Academic Affairs to strengthen the MSW program. She created a new advising open house and advising videos for the main website and established an online adjunct orientation and teaching development day to better integrate, orient, and develop the teaching skills of adjunct faculty and to improve communication and the organizational culture for adjuncts, who cover about 40 percent of MSW courses.

About the Event

The ACUI will host its annual women’s leadership institute for women of all ages to come together to learn and network with one another, form a stronger community in college and university environments, and become empowered to pursue higher-level positions within their respective fields. The program is co-produced by members of the Council for Higher Education Management Association.

Held Dec. 3-6, 2017, at the Ritz-Carlton Amelia Island near Jacksonville, Fla., this institute is the premier program for university women leaders. The program is held at a resort-style location to maximize learning and minimize distractions, and it is designed for women who aspire to new leadership positions on campus. The institute features a curriculum with an overall focus on building the next generation of leaders in higher education administration and student affairs.

The program will bring together administrators from several university functions to help:

  • Hone leadership skills in a rapidly changing environment.
  • Develop a better understanding of the university as a workplace and culture.
  • Share experiences with others about how universities are adapting and adjusting to the new reality.
  • Create new personal networks and networking skills to better tap into the higher education community.

The UMB Roundtable on Empowerment in Leadership and Leveraging Aspirations (UMBrella) is a group that helps women achieve their potential, find their voices, and feel empowered. UMBrella works to support the success of women, advance women into leadership roles at UMB, and champion women at all levels of our organization.
