Letters to the UMB Community

UMB Clinical Guidance

March 2, 2020

Dear Colleagues,

In partnership with the deans of each school, the University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB) is implementing clinical, field placement, and internship guidelines to assure the safety of all students, employees, physicians, patients, and those in our communities. These guidelines are to encourage a safe environment for all members of our community. Please follow this link for UMB guidance for clinicals, field placements, and internships.

The University relies on information provided by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the World Health Organization, the U.S. State Department, state and local health departments, and on-campus public health experts to guide decisions concerning the safety of students participating in clinicals, field placements, and internships. We encourage all UMB students, faculty, and staff to follow the precautions issued by CDC and the advice of UMB Environmental Health and Safety regarding health and safety measures. We encourage clinical, field placement, and internship coordinators to share this guidance with all sites in order to have a shared understanding of when these experiences should be suspended.

The University is actively monitoring the COVID-19 outbreak, staying up to date on the latest guidance from CDC, and being proactive in implementing measures to keep our UMB community safe. The University's Incident Management Team, organized specifically for this outbreak, is meeting regularly to evaluate the situation and make decisions to safeguard the health of our community. I continue to urge all members of our community at home and abroad to practice preventive actions to help stop the spread of germs.

For the latest information and updates from the University, visit UMB's dedicated Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) website. Thank you for all you do for UMB and those we serve. Our Incident Management Team will continue to strive to keep you safe and healthy so that we can all continue to improve the human condition globally.

Sincerely,

Bruce E. Jarrell, MD, FACS
Interim President
