Letters to the UMB Community

Post-Labor Day Testing

September 03, 2020

Dear UMB Community,

Thank you for your continued diligence to help keep the University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB) community healthy and safe. Daily symptom monitoring, physical distancing, face coverings, and testing are tools we use to create a low-transmission environment at UMB. In consultation with the University System of Maryland (USM), UMB will require that all students, faculty, and staff coming to campus between Sept. 7 and Sept. 26 receive a negative COVID-19 test during that period. For some, this is a second/additional test to the one required before the semester began. Unless you are sick and/or have COVID-19 symptoms, you may be on campus while awaiting results.

Information about testing locations is below:

  • The Baltimore Convention Center Field Hospital is open Wednesdays and Fridays from 8 a.m.-2 p.m. and has walk-in testing available. You may also choose to schedule an appointment.
  • Students and employees participating in on-campus programs at the Universities at Shady Grove may want to use one of the free state of Maryland COVID-19 testing sites in Prince George’s or Montgomery counties.
  • Information on additional testing locations in the state of Maryland can be found here.
  • Students and employees living outside of Maryland may visit their state health department’s website for information on COVID-19 testing available in their state.

By Sept. 26, students should submit their negative COVID-19 diagnostic test result to Castle Branch. Students who test positive for COVID-19 should seek medical advice from their health care provider and also contact the UMB COVID-19 Hotline at 800-701-9863.

Faculty and staff should upload their negative COVID-19 diagnostic test result to SAFE on Campus. Faculty and staff who test positive should also seek medical advice from their health care provider and must contact the UMB COVID-19 Hotline at 800-701-9863.

You can find FAQs about this testing requirement on the COVID-19 recovery page. UMB will continue to hold strong to high standards for the health and safety of each other and our community. Thank you for doing your part. I hope that you have a restful and safe Labor Day weekend.

Sincerely,

Bruce E. Jarrell, MD, FACS
Interim President
