UMB Alerts Protocol and Procedures

UMB has a new set of alerts procedures.

UMB Alerts will be sent in the following situations:
  • Incidents that occur on campus (the area within the blue boundary of the campus map) as determined by the Chief of Police or his/her designee using the Clery Act as guidance.
  • Incidents that occur off campus (outside the blue boundary on the campus map) when the suspect(s)/perpetrator(s) are determined to be a direct threat to the university community, as determined by the Chief of Police or his/her designee.
  • Incidents that happen outside of the blue boundary – regardless of whether a UMB student or employee is involved, except in the circumstance noted above.
  • Incidents that occurred within the blue boundary but were reported to the UMB police significantly after the fact.

Special Circumstances

UMB Alerts may also be considered under special circumstances with the recommendation of the Chief of Police and approval of the President or his/her designee. Examples might be civil unrest, traffic issues or special weather-related events, which will be clearly marked as such.

The Office of Communications and Public Affairs is responsible for sending the above-named alerts and advisories after being requested by the Chief of Police or his/her designee, except under special circumstances or times of urgency or limited resources when the Chief of Police will send the communication himself.
