OIS Updates Surrounding COVID-19

July 7, 2020

Dear International Students:

You have probably heard the news that U.S. Immigration and Customs issued a rule on July 6, 2020 that international students will not be able to take ONLY online courses and remain legally in the US this fall.

We understand that these are stressful times, so please know you are welcome and valued at UMB. We value you and the richness that you bring to our Baltimore community as international students. We are here to support you.

The University of Maryland, Baltimore has not yet finalized plans for Fall 2020 instruction.  Further details will be forthcoming, but we want you to know that we are working to ensure that you have a quality educational experience this fall. Dr. Jarrell and UMB senior leaders will share additional information as details become finalized.

We are collaborating and consulting with other institutions in the U.S., all of which are facing the same situation.

The Office of International Services and the campus will communicate updates as soon as we are able. Updates will also be posted on the Office of International Services website.

You all have received emails from UMB officials regarding continued preparation and response to COVID-19 (known as coronavirus). If not, please be sure to reference the coronavirus information provided by University leadership on the UMB home page.  OIS staff want to assure you we stand ready to support our international community at UMB, while doing our part to follow social distancing guidelines.

We anticipate being able to manage all requests virtually, in observance of the campus guidance issued March 12, 2020 implementing teleworking. The safety of our students, faculty and staff are our top priority.

Please take a moment to review updates to OIS services:

Implemented beginning March 16, 2020 until further notice (as updates are communicated out by UMB leadership):

  • International students and scholars may request appointments with OIS staff via WebEx by completing the appointment request e-form in Sunapsis. Your appointment confirmation will include a link to the WebEx meeting.
  • To request travel signatures from OIS staff, please complete the travel reporting and signature e-form and request a WebEx appointment with an OIS staff member. International students should carefully review travel guidelines for UMB students. International faculty, postdoctoral fellows and staff should review the UMB travel guidelines for all faculty and staff. OIS staff are ready to assist you with any travel questions you may have.
  • Current UMB international students and scholars can continue to request immigration services by filling out the relevant e-form in Sunapsis.

OIS staff will continue to communicate with you as this rapidly changing situation evolves. Please reach out to OIS by email at ois-info@umaryland.edu. You can also call 410.706.7488 and leave a voicemail message; we will return your call as soon as possible. We thank you for your understanding and ongoing communication with us; we are all in this together.
