Bonnie Bissonette, MA, EdD
Bonnie Bissonette, MA, EdD, who has been with the University of Maryland, Baltimore’s (UMB) Center for Global Education Initiatives (CGE) since 2012, is CGE’s director of education abroad and international safety, working to strengthen international opportunities at the University’s seven schools by collaborating with faculty, staff, and students. Bissonette develops creative and collaborative programs as well as processes and procedures, appropriate safety and security mechanisms, and other logistics relevant to international experiences.
Previously, Bissonette was associate dean of business and international education at Northcentral Technical College in Wausau, Wis., for 10 years, and, prior to that, a U.S. Foreign Service officer (management), serving for 13 years at U.S. embassies in England, Madagascar, Mauritius, Eritrea, and Qatar. She was vice president for public policy and practice on the board of directors of NAFSA-Association of International Educators, 2017 to 2019, and served as NAFSA’s secretary on the board of directors from 2008 to 2011. Bissonette is a frequent presenter on international education leadership topics and the go-to resource for all questions related to international travel. She received her bachelor’s degree from the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, Minn.; her master’s from George Washington University in Washington, D.C.; and her EdD from the University of Minnesota. Her thesis explored community college presidents’ views of elements of campus internationalization.
