Honduras Project

Providing dental care & health education in Pinalejo, Honduras

Students: Jhosdyn Barragan, Peter Fereg, Binait Kabir, Allegra Lichauco, Aidan Gallagher

Students from the UMB School of Dentistry traveled to Pinalejo, Honduras with faculty member, Dr. Ramsay Koury Jr. and worked in collaboration with Medical Ministry International. Students worked closely with licensed medical, pharmacy, and dental professionals to provide quality health care to rural communities with limited access and resources. Students participated by assisting with site preparation (unpacking and organizing supplies and medications, arranging operatory and sterilization stations and determining daily assignments); and working alongside dentist mentors to take patient histories and conduct screenings as well as diagnose and treat dental decay and disease.

Student quotes:

"Before this trip, I never realized what a valued gift dentistry could be... I now see dentistry as so much more than just a career." - Peter Fereg

"I feel honored to have interacted with people as strong as the patients in Honduras. I think that a good dentist has to feel for the patients in order to fully treat them." - Binait Kabir

“The week in Honduras cemented an important lesson in me: it is more rewarding and life-changing to give than to receive. I hope that one day I can return to Honduras and visit other corners of the world to utilize my education and skills." - Allegra Lichauco

“What I realized after the trip was that both sides needed each other…it has become apparent to me that anyone can help, regardless of status or standing, and helping someone who truly needs it can make a lasting difference.” - Jhosdyn Barragan
