Bruce Jarrell PortraitBruce Jarrell was named the University of Maryland, Baltimore’s (UMB) executive vice president and provost in December 2017, expanding his already wide-ranging duties.

Since April 2012, Jarrell has served as the focal point for all academic matters at UMB and is responsible for facilitating the research mission of the University by working closely with UMB administrators, the deans, the research leadership of the schools, and other individuals. He also is responsible for overseeing Human Research Protection at UMB. Through and with the deans and vice presidents, Jarrell works to further the University’s core values among faculty, staff, and students in the leadership, management, and promotion of the institution’s education, research, clinical, and community engagement agendas. Jarrell, who is dean of the Graduate School, also oversees many of the University’s most critical institutional relationships, such as the University of Maryland Strategic Partnership: MPowering the State, UMB’s innovative and structured collaboration with the University of Maryland, College Park (UMCP), and in building and maintaining academic interactions with all University System of Maryland institutions. Jarrell also is an affiliate professor in UMCP’s Fischell Department of Bioengineering. Prior to his current role, Jarrell served as executive vice dean in UMB’s School of Medicine and chairman of the Department of Surgery.
