Laurie Locascio, PhD, MSc

Laurie Locascio PortraitLaurie Locascio, PhD, MSc, is vice president for research at the University of Maryland, College Park (UMCP) and the University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB).

In this role, Locascio oversees the vibrant research and innovation enterprise at the two institutions, which garner a combined $1.1 billion in external research funding each year. Within Locascio’s purview are the development of large interdisciplinary research programs, technology commercialization, innovation and economic development efforts, and strategic partnerships with industry, federal, academic, and nonprofit collaborators. She also is a professor in UMCP’s Fischell Department of Bioengineering. She previously worked at the National Institute of Standards and Technology, most recently as acting principal deputy director and associate director responsible for leading the internal scientific research and laboratory programs across two campuses in Gaithersburg, Md., and Boulder, Colo. Locascio received a bachelor’s degree in chemistry from James Madison University, a master’s in bioengineering from the University of Utah, and a PhD in toxicology from UMB. As a biomedical researcher, she has published more than 100 scientific papers and 12 patents.
