Student Global Grant Application

Current and continuing students who are enrolled in a degree program of the University of Maryland, Baltimore schools (dentistry, law, medicine, nursing, pharmacy, social work and graduate) are eligible to apply for a student grant to participate in a global health interprofessional project. Please read the instructions below and prepare your documents before going to the online application.

Application Instructions

To be eligible, you must be a current and continuing (returning for at least one full semester) student enrolled in a degree program and be in good standing at the University of Maryland, Baltimore. Students are responsible for confirming with their academic advisor(s) that their participation on a project team will be approved for the specified time frame (not all school calendars align with project dates). If you want to apply to more than one open project, you will rank them in order of preference.

Part A: Add your personal information.

Part B: Please indicate your availability for interviews with faculty members who are leading the project.

Part C: Upload a document with answers to all of the following questions:

  1. Personal statement. In 500 words or less, indicate your reasons for applying to this global health opportunity and describe the experience you will bring to the project (e.g., via prior employment, academics, service, and international experience). **If you wish to apply to more than one program, please, write and include a 500-word statement for each program for which you are applying.**
  2. Please describe how a global health interprofessional program will help you achieve your professional goals.
  3. Have you ever worked as part of a project team? An interprofessional or mixed-background team? Please describe your experience and what you understand about the value of interprofessional education. What do you expect to gain longer term from the interprofessional aspect of this project?
  4. Will you be asking for credit within your school for this experience?  If so, please, tell us who will be your designated mentor and what your requirements will be to fulfill your credit(s)? (NOTE: CGE does not offer or supervise academic credit - this must be arranged completely by the student in his/her own school.)

Part E: Upload 1-2 letters of reference from a faculty member, advisor, or current/former employer (internships are included). You also may have your letter of reference emailed directly to Virginia Rowthorn, but it must be received by the application deadline.

Application Review Process

Student applications will be reviewed and evaluated by selected members from the Global Health Interprofessional Council (GHIC), an interprofessional group of faculty and staff from all UMB schools. Reviewers will consider each of the criteria below in determining the merit of each application. Each application will be reviewed by at least two members of the committee. Only completed applications submitted by 11:59 p.m. ET on the due date will be forwarded to the review committee.

All applications are put into one rank-ordered list. Some students may be asked to interview with a faculty grantee before final decisions are made, but not all students will necessarily be interviewed before being selected. In addition to the position on the ranking list, the final determination as to the students selected for the project will involve balancing the interprofessional composition of the team. The final decision rests with the faculty grantee and will be based on a combination of the reviewers’ recommendation, any interview that may take place, and the interprofessional balance of the team. 

Scored review criteria:

  • Interest in participating: What is the source and level of motivation to participate in an interprofessional project?
  • Contribution to the project: Is the student’s stated contribution to the project supported by their background and/or experience?
  • Impact and benefits of being a grantee: Has the student articulated well the anticipated impact of the project’s scope of work on their professional development?
  • Value of teamwork and interprofessional work: Does the student have experience working in teams and/or have an understanding of the value of multidisciplinary team coordination?
  • Letter of recommendation: Does the referee specify qualities that would make the student a good candidate for a global health interprofessional grant? Does the referee provide examples of how the student has exemplified these qualities through their work?


Is the whole application restricted to 500 words?

No, only Question 1, your personal statement, is restricted to 500 words. If you are particularly interested in specific programs, you are required to write targeted personal statements for each of the selected programs. Please clearly label these paragraphs.

I noticed that I can list my preference for up to three countries. What if I have equal preference for two or three countries?

You can populate the fields for your first, second, and/or third choices and use the notes section to let reviewers know about your preferences or travel date restrictions.


Whom should I choose to write my letter of recommendation?

We will accept letters of recommendation from individuals who can soundly evaluate your work in your professional field or in a professional capacity. These individuals may include faculty mentors, current or past employers, and internship or rotation supervisors.

Is there a form or format that is required for my letter of recommendation?

No, there is no form or format that is required. Individuals writing a letter for you should qualify themselves as a reference for you (how long they have known you and in what position they were able to evaluate your work/character). They may provide an opinion about you as a candidate for this program and/or discuss any of your achievements/work you have done under their mentorship/supervision. The letter should be signed or the referee can email it directly to Virginia Rowthorn

What if I miss the application deadline?

Applications that are submitted after the deadline will not be considered.


I will not be able to attend the meet-and-greet event with the project faculty. Is there another way to have my specific questions answered?

Email your questions to Virginia Rowthorn and they will be answered by the center or specifically by the faculty project leaders, depending on the nature of the question.


When will I hear back about my application?

You will receive a notification letter about your placement on a project by the end of the day as indicated on our timeline. Some faculty (not all) will be conducting interviews before the letters are released. If you do not get called for an interview, it does not mean that you will not be placed on a project.


What if I am offered a grant on a project but have a competing opportunity that I am still waiting to hear from?

Grant offer letters will be distributed as indicated on our timeline and students are given 10-14 days to accept or decline the grant. Every project position will be filled, so if a student declines their grant, the next student on the waiting list will be offered the opportunity. Because project teams will begin to work together soon after the grants are allocated, we ask that students send us their decision to participate by the given deadline.


Is it possible to apply for financial aid to cover the out-of-pocket expenses?

Students who receive financial aid may be eligible to receive additional funds to cover their trip expenses if they will receive credit for their experience and if the credit is applied toward their degree. Students should meet with their financial aid officer to discuss their eligibility for additional funding as soon as possible.


What other funding can I pursue to help defray the out-of-pocket expenses?

Students from past projects have applied and received travel awards that were available through their schools or from external sources. Others have raised funds through GoFundMe pages or have received scholarships and donations from organizations with whom they are involved or have affiliations.
