Fire extinguishers are provided in all UMB buildings as required by Code, with the exception of allowances permitted by the State Fire Marshal. The Department of Environmental Health & Safety is responsible for the maintenance and inspection of all UMB fire extinguishers.
Requests for additional, non-required fire extinguishers will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis. Any school or department wishing to provide their own additional fire extinguishers on top of those required by Code will be subject to performing the required inspection and testing, not EHS. Any extinguishers found which are not properly maintained will be removed.
In-person fire extinguisher training is offered by EHS. It is a 30 minute class that covers basic fire information before getting into fire extinguishers. Participants will have the opportunity to practice using a fire extinguisher using a digital training simulator. Fire extinguisher training is not offered on a routine basis, training is only provided when requested.
