Bloodborne Pathogen Exposure (Human Bodily Fluids)

Please note that this information and phone number are for University of Maryland staff and faculty ONLY

After a needlestick or splash with human blood/body fluids do the following:

  1. Wash exposed area with soap and water or irrigate exposed mucous membranes (e.g. eyes) with water
  2. Report exposure or injury to supervisor immediately
  3. Complete the UM "Employee’s First Report of Injury" form and fax a completed copy of the Employee's First Report of Injury to Angela Boxley at 6-3221. This will ensure timely processing of claim and issuance of claim number and prescription authorization, if appropriate.
  4. Seek Medical Treatment

Seeking Medical Treatment:

During Business Hours (Monday through Friday, 7 AM to 5 PM):

  1. Call the UMB Bloodborne Pathogen Exposure Hotline at (667) 214-1886. Your call will be answered by a medical professional who will advise you on the risk of your exposure, what treatment you may need and facilitate the "Source Patient's" blood being tested.

  2. Proceed directly to the UMaryland Immediate Care Center (UMICC) located at 408 W. Lombard Street. The Immediate Care Center telephone number is (667) 214-1899. (No appointment is necessary)
  3. The employee should take a copy of the completed Employee’s First Report of Injury form with them to ensure that they will not be billed for the visit.
