Religious and Multicultural Holidays

UMB celebrates diversity and inclusion! This list contains holidays, traditional observances, and major days of religious significance.

Although many of these days are not official University holidays, faculty, and staff are asked to use this information and their discretion when responding to student requests for time off for religious and/or cultural purposes. Consider using these dates to aid in developing class syllabi, planning for examinations, and organizing large-scale events.

Additional Notes:

  • Classes are not in session for holidays indicated in bold and italic.
  • All Jewish and Islamic holidays begin at sundown on the evening before the first date shown.
  • * These holidays have been designated non-work days by the religions that celebrate them.
  • # Some of these dates are not fixed to a calendar but based on the actual sighting of the moon and therefore there may be some variance by a day.

Help us enrich and educate our University community - if you see a holiday missing from our list, please send us a comment! Include the name of the holiday, the date, a brief description, and any related events. This calendar is maintained by the Diversity Advisory Council.

*Please use this calendar as a tool when planning events on campus. These events are for reference and not necessarily endorsed by the University.
