COVID-19 Testing Guidance Letter

August 11, 2020 (updated August 13, 2020)

As you know, the University System of Maryland has mandated COVID-19 testing and symptom monitoring for students and employees returning in fall 2020. Below please find information about deadlines for getting tested as well as suggestions on where to be tested.

Who has to be tested?

  • Any student or employee who will be on UMB’s campus or at UMB's facilities for housing, in-person classes, educational activities, or to work.
  • The policy does not apply to students going solely to clinical sites. Please follow the clinical site’s guidance.

When should I be tested?

  • If already on campus or arriving prior to Aug.17:
    • Students should make arrangements to be tested for COVID-19 as soon as practical and should complete the SAFE on Campus symptom monitoring form daily.
    •  On-campus employees should make arrangements to be tested for COVID-19 as soon as practical and should continue to use SAFE on Campus or another symptom monitoring process communicated by the employee's supervisor.
  •  Arriving Aug.17 or later:
    •  Any student or employee must be tested for COVID-19 within 14 days prior to arrival on campus and provide confirmation of a negative COVID-19 test prior to starting in-person classes, educational activities, or working on campus. For example, if scheduled to be on campus Aug. 31, get tested between Aug.17- 30 and provide your negative result from that time period.

What kind of test do I need?

  • You must get a COVID-19 diagnostic test. This type of test will show if you have an active coronavirus infection. Currently there are two types of diagnostic tests: molecular tests, such as RT-PCR tests, that detect the virus’ genetic material, and antigen tests that detect specific proteins on the surface of the virus.
  • UMB will NOT accept a positive or negative COVID-19 antibody test result.

How do I submit test results?

  • Students should not upload their COVID-19 test results into the SAFE form and will soon receive guidance on how to share their COVID-19 test results.
  • Employees must maintain an electronic copy of your negative COVID-19 diagnostic test result. Instructions on where to upload that result will be coming soon.

Where can I get tested?

There are four options for getting tested:

Register with SAFE on Campus

This week students and employees will receive an email from safe-no-reply@umaryland.edu instructing you to register for SAFE on Campus. Everyone must register for SAFE on Campus. Employees who are teleworking and students who are learning remotely can request a pause. Learn more here.
