What is the status of CDC entry bans to the U.S. for international students and scholars seeking to come to UMB?

May 21, 2021

The CDC currently prohibits the entry of non-U.S. citizens and permanent residents traveling from Brazil, China, European Schengen Area, India, Iran, Ireland, South Africa, and the United Kingdom.

New international students and scholars seeking entry on F-1 student and J-1 exchange visitor visas from one of the countries listed above can receive a National Interest Exception (NIE) to enter the U.S. NIEs are granted by the State Department at the time a visa is issued at a U.S. embassy or consulate. NIEs for international students and scholars traveling from Brazil, China, India, Iran and South Africa are only available for program start dates on or after Aug. 1, 2021. NIEs for travelers from the European Schengen Area, Ireland and the United Kingdom can be issued regardless of program start date.
