Guidance on Leave Carryover

November 2, 2020

Dear Colleagues,

The University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB) continues to look for ways to help our faculty and staff during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Over the past seven months, many of our faculty and staff members have been working longer hours and in different ways as we continue to adjust how we conduct research, educate our students, and keep the University running during the pandemic. We thank everyone in the UMB community for helping to ensure that UMB can remain open and fulfill our mission.

It is important, especially during these times, that faculty and staff take time away from work to rest and refresh by using their paid leave. Many faculty and staff members have been able to use their leave, but for others, it has been a challenge.

In recognition of this, the University System of Maryland (USM) has released guidance that includes a temporary exception to the number of hours that may be carried into a new calendar year under BOR II-2.40 - Policy on Annual Leave for Faculty and BOR VII-7.00 - Policy on Annual Leave for Regular Nonexempt and Exempt Staff Employees. The guidance allows faculty and staff to carry up to 480 hours over for the next calendar year. Additional details are provided in the attached Faculty Guidance Document and staff USM Guidance Document.

The normal procedures for requesting time off remain in effect, as do other provisions of the UMB Policy on Annual Leave for Faculty and Policy on Annual Leave for Regular Nonexempt and Exempt Staff Employees. If you have any questions about the attached guidance, please contact your school's or department's Human Resources representative.
Thank you,
