Unified Messaging FAQ
Q: What is unified messaging?
A: Unified messaging is the capability of having your voice mail messages delivered to you via your email account.
Q: What do I need for unified messaging?
A: You must first have a voice mailbox, an email account, and a computer or device that is capable of playing a wave file (a file in a Microsoft audio file format: .wav).
Q: How do I get unified messaging?
A: Complete the Unified Messaging Request form.
Q: Do I need to manage the storage of these wave files?
A: Yes, a wave file takes up space in your email account. A two-three minute message can take up as much as a 1 MB of email storage space. These files, just like email messages, should be moved periodically to Mail Folders in order have available space in your emailbox.
Q: Why do some messages have the name of individuals with a phone number and other messages only have a phone number?
A. If the voice mail message is a unified message user and their name and number is in the voice mail database, it will be displayed in the Subject line of the email. If the call is from someone not in the database, the name and number may not be displayed. The calling number may appear if the ANI (Automatic Number Identification) is allowed. People who block passing ANI (Caller ID) will not have their number show up in the subject line of the email.
Q: Can these wave files be sent to others?
A: Yes. Just as an email attachment can be forwarded to another email account, the wave file can be forwarded, opened, and played by another individual. Thus, discretion should be used when forwarding or saving sensitive information in a wave file.
Q: Can I listen to messages on my handheld device?
A: If your handheld device has the ability to receive email with attachments and the device has the ability to play Microsoft wave files, you should have the same functionality as a computer.
