Letters to the UMB Community

Upcoming Pay Raises

May 12, 2023

Dear Colleagues:

I am very pleased to share that Gov. Wes Moore’s office has approved a cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) and merit pay increase for eligible University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB) faculty and staff. Not only will these COLA and merit raises help reduce the burden of high inflation on our workforce, they also will continue to strengthen UMB’s ability to recruit and retain a talented workforce to ensure that our University continues to improve the human condition and serve the public good of Maryland.

Eligible faculty and staff will see 2.0 percent COLA and 2.5 percent merit increases added to their paycheck of Aug. 4, 2023, which will include a retroactive pay adjustment back to July 1, 2023.

We do recognize that there are some employees who are not eligible for this COLA and merit adjustment. While UMB advocated for additional state support for non-state-funded salaries, the state will not be providing such support at this time.

I am grateful that Maryland’s leaders are taking this step to support our University community as well as employees throughout state government. Additional details on eligibility can be found on this document: July 1, 2023 Compensation Guidelines. Thank you for your continued dedication and commitment to UMB and those we serve.

If you have questions, please contact Human Resource Services at HRComp@umaryland.edu.

Sincerely,

Bruce E. Jarrell, MD, FACS

President
