Upcoming COLA Increase In November

October 17, 2022

Dear Colleagues:

I am very pleased to share that the governor’s office has approved a cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) for eligible UMB faculty and staff. This COLA will help UMB employees and their families with the challenges they are facing during a period of high inflation. This increase will also strengthen UMB’s ability to recruit and retain a talented workforce to ensure UMB continues to improve the human condition and serve the public good of Maryland.

Eligible faculty and staff will see 4.5 percent COLA added to their paycheck of Nov. 23, 2022, which includes a retroactive pay adjustment back to Nov. 1, 2022.

We do recognize that all employees are not eligible for this cost-of-living adjustment. We also are aware that the COLA might not be supported with additional state funding to cover those on nonstate support. We are, however, advocating for additional support of COLA funding for nonstate-funded salaries.

I am grateful that Maryland's leaders are taking this step to support our university community as well as employees throughout state government. Additional details on eligibility can be found here: November COLA guidelines. Thank you for your continued dedication and commitment to UMB and those we serve.

If you have questions, please contact Human Resource Services at HRComp@umaryland.edu.

Sincerely,

Bruce E. Jarrell, MD, FACS

President
