Letters to the UMB Community

Statement on the Middle East

October 09, 2023

Dear UMB Community,

The Hamas attacks and subsequent loss of life in Israel and Gaza are terrible. The situation in the region has brought forth a wave of conflict and tension that deeply concerns us all. The loss of lives and the suffering endured by innocent civilians are deeply saddening, and we stand in solidarity with all those who yearn for peace and stability in the region.

In times like these, it is crucial that we remain committed to our core values, promoting open and respectful conversations about the situation, with empathy and compassion.

Our thoughts are with the students, faculty, and staff who have personal connections to the region and anyone else impacted by this. I encourage the UMB community to reach out and support one another, and to take advantage of the resources available through the Student Counseling Center, Employee Assistance Program, and Office of International Services.

We hope for a swift and peaceful resolution to the conflict in the Middle East affecting the Israeli and Palestinian people, and we remain dedicated to a more just and peaceful world.

Sincerely,

Bruce E. Jarrell, MD, FACS

President
