Letters to the UMB Community

Key Bridge Tragedy

March 26, 2024

Dear UMB Community,

Early this morning, the Francis Scott Key Bridge on Interstate 695 in Baltimore collapsed after being struck by a cargo ship. This is a major tragedy for our city and state. Search-and-rescue operations are underway.

Our thoughts are with those impacted by this disaster and their loved ones. We are grateful for the first responders who continue the search-and-rescue operations at this time.

Currently, all lanes of I-695 in both directions near the Key Bridge are closed. Please avoid that area and use I-95 and I-895 as alternate routes. The city, state, and federal officials responding to the tragedy have asked for patience from the public.

The University of Maryland, Baltimore has resources available for anyone who needs support at this time through the Student Counseling Center and the Employee Assistance Program

We are keeping the people involved in this devastating tragedy in our thoughts.

Sincerely,

Bruce E. Jarrell, MD, FACS

President
