University of Maryland, Baltimore Police Department (UMBPD) security officer Lee Preston has been with the department for 14 years. He enjoys interacting with people from all walks of life.

“I like being able to relate and assist the UMB community and those visiting,” says Preston, who was nominated by his supervisors to be March's Spotlight Officer. Part of his role is making sure that each person who enters a UMB building has signed in for the safety of our community.

“Sometimes people didn’t want to use Lobby Guard,” Preston says. “But once I explained the importance and purpose of the Lobby Guard, then they understand and comply.”

Preston encourages new students to set goals. “Don’t allow anyone or anything to prevent you from achieving your goals and see them to the end.” He also reminds students to be aware of their surroundings, don’t travel alone, and put away your phone when outside.

Outside of work, Preston enjoys spending time with family and playing video games with his kids. “I’m easygoing and an avid sports fan of basketball, football, and pro wrestling,” says Preston. “I’m a God-fearing man. Without him, there’s no me.”

In the future, Preston says he wants to continue to be a positive influence for future security officers joining UMBPD.
