Jason Kunz

Jason KunzLt. Jason Kunz joined University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB) Police and Public Safety in 2022 when UMB and the University of Baltimore (UBalt) began a public safety partnership.

Kunz, who has spent 25 years as a police officer in the University System of Maryland (USM), has now been with UMB for a year and a half.

“Assuming a leadership position has been my greatest achievement on the job,” says Kunz. “I enjoy interacting with the community and my peers.”

Kunz says he became an officer because he wanted to play an integral part of the emergency response team in crisis situations. At UMB, he serves as an operations shift commander and a liaison for UBalt Safety and Security.

Working at UBalt and UMB allows Kunz to meet students from both institutions. “Each institution has its own public safety services,” Kunz says. Examples of these services include Safe Walk, comfort K9, and emergency alerts. “Students should be aware of their surroundings and become familiar with these services.”

Over the past 25 years, Kunz has experienced many complex situations as an officer. “I take my time to gather information and make informed decisions with the best interests of all parties involved,” says Kunz. His work earned him a commendation for his role in a child neglect investigation.

In the future, Kunz looks forward to continuing to grow within UMB Police and Public Safety. Outside of work, he enjoys exercise, golf, and spending time with his family. Kunz says he also enjoys traveling (especially to the beach!) and exploring new places.
