Security officer Danielle Wheeler joined the University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB) Police and Public Safety team when she filled out the wrong application.

“I thought I was applying to be a PCO [police communications operator],” she says with a laugh. “They called to schedule my interview to be a security officer and I realized I filled out the wrong form. But now, I’m glad I did.”

Wheeler describes herself as a “people person.” Now with the department for a year and seven months, Wheeler puts those people skills to work by getting to know students and employees in Health Sciences Research Facility III (HSRF III), where she's posted.

“I let everyone know how important it is to scan your badge,” she says. Every UMB student and employee is required to scan their One Card in each building for the safety of the UMB community. Security officers like Wheeler help to ensure the system is used. 

Wheeler was wholeheartedly recommended for the September spotlight by UMB Public Safety leadership. “Security officer Danielle Wheeler is a great person for the spotlight!” wrote Vanessa Harrington, director of security and compliance. Security supervisor Jacquella Croslin and Assistant Chief Chad Ellis also recommended Wheeler for the spotlight.

A faculty member in HSRF III also reached out to UMB Public Safety leadership in support of Wheeler. “Officer Wheeler is making a positive impact on the staff, faculty, students and visitors that arrive in HSRF III,” they wrote. “Her presence in the building has not only added to the safety and security of those in the building through her professional and caring demeanor all the while following the proper policies and procedures necessary.” The letter goes on to describe Wheeler as “one of the best officers we have worked with.”

Outside of work, Wheeler says she enjoys spending time with family, going on trips, and finding time to relax. She enjoys making others laugh, creating memories, and says she is “very big on fashion.”
