Cpl. Tia Taylor’s bright smile and friendly demeanor are well known across the University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB). “I became an officer because I enjoy helping people,” she says.

“There’s a stigma that all police officers are bad,” she says. “I build strong relationships with our community to show them that not all police are the same.”

Taylor has been an officer for 15 years, starting with Morgan State University. Since joining the UMB Police Department, she has become the department’s first female firearms instructor — a huge achievement!

As students, faculty, and staff return to campus, Taylor reminds you to be aware of your surroundings. “If something doesn’t feel right, go with your gut!”

Outside of work, Taylor enjoys cycling. She participated in the Major Taylor Invitational race in Indianapolis, cycling 100 miles in one day! Taylor is very family-oriented and expresses these values through her work ethic.

In the future, Taylor hopes to become a sergeant and, one day, maybe even chief!
