University of Maryland, Baltimore Police Department (UMBPD) security officer Terri Smallwood became a spotlight officer thanks to her “quick thinking and attention to her surroundings,” said Assistant Chief Chad Ellis.

Smallwood, who has been a security officer for two years, was working when someone told her their phone was stolen on the bus. Acting swiftly, Smallwood radioed for help, allowing police officers to quickly find the suspect and recover the phone. “I want to praise security officer Smallwood for a job well done,” Ellis said.

Smallwood describes the situation as her most memorable moment with UMBPD. “It took me by surprise, but I think I handled it pretty well,” she says.

Smallwood joined the department after working for the Maryland Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services. When she chose to leave corrections, she thought becoming a security officer would be a perfect fit.

“My favorite part of security is helping people on campus,” she says. “People may ask for directions or locations for something. I like to help them get to where they’re going. I’m never put off by questions or concerns.”

When she talks with students, Smallwood recommends staying vigilant and taking advantage of the Safe Walk/Safe Ride service. “If you have any questions, feel free to ask any security officers in the area,” she says. “We’re here to keep you safe!”

The security officer prides herself on her work ethic and ability to handle difficult situations. She says she remains calm and polite while relying on her customer service skills. “I haven't received many accolades since I’ve been here, but I’m confident in my job and what I do,” which allowed me to obtain this spotlight recognition for November!” she says.

Outside of work, Smallwood likes to spend time with family. “I love being a boy mom,” she says. “Every day I come to work, I’m pushing for them.” She says she also enjoys reading and watching movies.

In the future, she hopes to build on her career and maybe one day go into law enforcement.
