Security officer Chermira Deshields can be found all around the University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB) campus. “You can find me anywhere from a corner post to being inside a building,” she says.

Deshields joind the department two years ago because she wanted to help others. “I love knowing that I did my part to make someone else's day,” she says. Reassuring students and staff that they are safe at UMB is her favorite part of the job. She encourages new students to stay focused and never be afraid to be themselves. 

Security supervisors selected Deshields to be September’s Spotlight Officer based on her good work. Deshields describes being selected as her most memorable moment. “It feels good to know that your hard work doesn’t go in vain,” she says.

Outside of work, Deshields enjoys spending time with family and pampering herself. “Self-care is the best care,” she says. That’s an excellent lesson for us all!
