  • Thomas Darnell is one of the longest-serving members of the University of Maryland, Baltimore Police Department (UMBPD). As of this month, he’s been with UMBPD for his entire 29-year career.

Darnell is known for his friendly personality and giving spirit. He is always happy to offer a helping hand. During the holidays, Darnell enjoys participating in the Kindertime Toy Drive. ”Seeing the looks on the kids’ faces when we delivered the gifts — it was incredibly memorable,” Darnell says.

Darnell spent the first five years of his career as a security officer. Eventually, he decided to make a career change and join the police department. Today, Darnell is the UMBPD fleet manager and is a member of the UMBPD Honor Guard Team, a volunteer position.

As a police officer, Darnell often works with vulnerable populations in the neighborhoods surrounding UMB. “It can be a challenge, but we want to provide them as much assistance as possible,” Darnell says. Starting this fall, UMBPD is partnering with the Social Work Community Outreach Service to provide even more services and resources to vulnerable populations.

As students return to campus, UMBPD police and security officers are working to ensure everyone’s safety. “Stay safe. Be aware of your surroundings,” Darnell says. “And good luck with your studies!”

In his free time, Darnell likes to spend time with his grandson, fish, and run his new remote control car.
