Security Officer Mary Leverington is a friendly face for students and employees at the University of Maryland School of Nursing (UMSON). When Leverington was named the University of Maryland, Baltimore Police Department’s (UMBPD) October Spotlight Officer, comments came pouring in.

“We’re all very excited to hear that Mary will be featured!” wrote UMSON editorial and public/media relations specialist Laura Hager. “She really is loved over at UMSON!”

Employees and students also stopped by the UMBPD table at Fall Fest to sing Leverington’s praises. The security officer is known for her friendly and helpful disposition.

The love Leverington receives from UMSON is clearly reciprocated. She says her most memorable moment from her eight years with UMBPD was when she found out she would be the UMSON security officer.

“My greatest achievement is using my skills as a security officer to assist students, faculty, and staff to feel safe while on campus at the nursing school,” Leverington says. She says being helpful and meeting new people is her favorite part of the job.

When engaging with students, Leverington encourages them to pay attention to their surroundings. “Call for a Safe Walk/Safe Ride if you need it,” she says. “And don’t forget your ID!”

Outside of work, Leverington enjoys working in the yard and spending time with her kids. She likes a good cup of coffee on Sunday mornings on her deck and watching sunsets when she can. “Life is too short,” she says. “So find ways to enjoy life!”
