PFC Jaquan Dickerson aims to be a positive role model for officers and citizens. “I want to be a person that inspires someone to change their life for the better,” he says. “I want people to be able to say, ‘If Officer Dickerson can do it, then I can do it.’ ”

Dickerson has been an officer for one year. He joined the University of Maryland, Baltimore Police Department (UMBPD) after serving as an officer with the Baltimore Police Department.

“I wanted to make a difference in a city that had a lot of tension and misunderstanding between citizens and law enforcement,” Dickerson says. He goes on to explain that being a young African American police officer can be a big challenge. “I just have to be who I am as a person and talk to the community about situations we go through [as officers],” he says. “Put them in our shoes.”

Over the past year, Dickerson has experienced a lot as an officer. He once performed CPR on someone experiencing an overdose, saving their life. He was awarded a life-saving award for his role in that response.

“My favorite part of being an officer is being able to give citizens the help that they need,” says Dickerson. He says officers often meet people on the worst day of their lives. “Being able to give them they help they need can be life-changing. It can change their perspective on law enforcement in a positive way.”

For students and employees new to UMB, Dickerson encourages you to go after your goals. “Don’t let outside voices stop you. Use those negative comments to inspire and motivate you.”

Outside of work, Dickerson likes to exercise and spend time with family and friends. Fun fact: He’s a twin!
