Over the past 24 years, Deborah Byrd has served the University of Maryland, Baltimore Police Department (UMBPD) as a police communication operator and a security officer. “I like being a public servant to help others,” she says. “I’m a good listener.”

Today, Byrd works as a security officer for UMBPD and says she loves interacting with people. She takes pride in her good customer service and positive attitude.

“You get out what you put into it,” Byrd says. “Always lend a helping hand to others.” She also believes in treating people with respect and dignity — a true example of UMB’s core value of civility.

Byrd offers the following advice to the UMB community: “Always be encouraged and be the best version of yourself. Don't give up on yourself — everyone has a bright future. You are the candle. All you have to do is light it with promises of a bright future.”
