Legal Advocacy

What is Happening in the News

Maryland State:

  • The 446th legislative session of the General Assembly will meet in Annapolis, Maryland from January 10 to April 8, 2024.
  • Please return to this website for updates on upcoming legislation.

Federally:

  • The proposed FY 2024 Victims of Crime Act (VOCA) grants allocation is 40% less than it was in FY 2023. NNEDV is doing advocacy around this issue, calling on Congress and the President to restore full funding for VOCA.
  • The S. v Rahimi is a Supreme Court Case that IPV advocates are closely monitoring. In February, the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals struck down a federal law banning gun possession for those subject to a domestic violence civil protective order. The Supreme Court is set to hear this case and the call is for them to overturn the lower courts' ruling. Here is a link to an article from BWJP about the case.
