The UMB Writing Center is a supportive resource that offers consultations to individuals from diverse backgrounds, including faculty, staff, students, researchers, and members of the Baltimore community. The center recognizes that writing goes beyond mere words and grammar, embracing an anti-racist perspective and acknowledging the intricate cultural and linguistic complexities present in today's professional and academic work. By considering factors such as language, race, ethnicity, gender, sexual identity, mobility, culture, citizenship, nationality, dis/ability, socio-economic status, class, and indigeneity, the center fosters collaboration across these boundaries. They understand that writing is a continual process that involves employing hybrid strategies to effectively communicate to multiple audiences in specific contexts. Rejecting notions of "perfect" drafts, the center emphasizes the social and negotiated nature of writing, rejecting standardized approaches and ideas of language correctness. They value the unique choices and expertise of writers, viewing them as accomplished colleagues whose diverse writing practices and professional knowledge enrich the center's services. The UMB Writing Center eagerly looks forward to engaging in a collective learning and writing experience with individuals seeking their support.
