Chemical Safety

liquid chemicals in clear science containers

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration’s (OSHA) standard on occupational exposure to hazardous chemicals in laboratories applies to all University laboratories.

This standard requires that the University have a written chemical hygiene plan, provide information and training on working with chemicals, ensure that laboratory safety equipment is working properly, and designate a chemical hygiene office to oversee the implementation of the chemical hygiene plan. In addition, the University must ensure that all unwanted chemicals are disposed of in an environmentally friendly manner and in compliance with Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and Maryland Department of the Environment (MDE) regulations.
